The genesis of Taylorist thought according to the empirical-managerial method

Abstract

The paper aims to critically characterize the empirical-managerial method regarding the history of managerial thought, exploring the more specific aspects on the genesis of Taylorism as an example of this thought. To this end, some of the main protagonists of greater international diffusion, especially in English, were delimited. The study of these authors allowed us to establish the most common elements among these authors, despite their differences. The empirical-managerial method that characterizes them presents an approach based on “evidence”, with an “objectivist” position and with an apologetic tendency of managerial thinking. In the method, it seeks to collect several explanatory factors of the genesis of managerial thinking in the figure of Taylorism. Among them, the experiences of Taylor's professional itinerary, as reported by the author himself, and the characteristics of his psychological profile stand out. This second factor preponderates in explanatory terms in the empirical-managerial method and brings problematic implications discussed throughout the paper.
